Assessment Task 2A: Skills Test – Report

SCANERIO:

Dallas Institute of Technology-DIT is a private Registered Training Organisation (RTO) with a campus based in South East of Melbourne. It is famous for its courses in IT and Project Management. It offers over 10 certificate and diploma level qualifications in the Vocational Education and Training (VET) sector for a large number of subject areas including business, community services, education, information technology, health, hospitality, and many others.

Students select from one of two study shifts (morning or afternoons) to undertake study which is self- directed in nature or trainer led, and to undertake assessments. With the self-directed courses, trainers/assessors are on hand to handle student’s queries, while other courses are trainer led.

There are currently 500 students that attend the institute across a wide range of classrooms. Depending on their studies, students who require access to a computer are given access Windows 10 desktop machine and a word processor and other software applicable to their studies plus access the internet. For classes that are self-directed, all learning materials are provided in print format, as are the assessments.

Student management system is undertaken on a bespoke applications called “Student Manager”. Student Manager is a tool used to record student attendance, unit completion, student’s notes, and other applicable student management tasks.

Dallas Institute of Technology-DIT use a mixture of laptops and desktop machines which all have Windows 10 and Microsoft Office 2016 installed on them. The network is managed by two servers:

· An
Admin server has Windows Server 2016 installed on it and is used by the employees of Delta Institute of Technology-DIT. It includes active directory, DNS, DHCP, and acts as the gateway to the internet. It also asks as an application server for the Student manager application and its associated database.

· A
Student server also has Windows Server 2016 installed on it and is used by the students for study purposes. It also has active directory on it, and a separate domain implementing DNS and DHCP services.

·
MOODLE: An Academic Management System has also been implemented in the college and it contains all the student’s academic resources along with assessments. All the student record is managed using this online management system

The head office of the Dallas Institute of Technology -DIT is situated in the CBD of Melbourne. The IT department is responsible for the management of the IT infrastructure. The network includes the LAN that connects the desktops, Laptops, Scanners, Printers, Login Machines and all the hand held and BYOD (Bring your Own Device). Also, a WAN has been implemented to connect the other campuses to the head office.

Adam id the Network administrator and is responsible for the management and the administration of the network. The core duty of Adam includes the stable connectivity of the network resources. · Create technical support documentation for systems and applications.

The network of the DIT is illustrated in the below given network diagram to make it easy for the system administration:

Report on action plan to Network faults and service restoration

The student will act as Adam-Network Administrator and will ensure that the network is properly connected and all the network faults have been removed and the network services are properly running.

It has been observed in the recent days, that the network connection is not stable and a number of network problems have been experienced by the users including both the staff members and the students. As mentioned earlier the network connectivity is very important for the optimal performance of not only the network but also the IT setup. Following are the network faults that have been experienced by the users in the past days:

· Duplicate IP Addresses

· IP Address Exhaustion

· DNS Problems

· Single Workstation Unable to Connect to the Network

· Unable to Connect to Local File or Printer Shares

Being the Network Administrator, the student needs to rectify the faults and also restore the network services. Before starting the fault rectification, the student needs to write a report on action plan to the network faults and restoration. The student will write the report and present it to the assessor/trainer who act as the IT Manager and will supervise the report writing task. This document will act as an official document of College’s IT support.

You will assume/take on the role of the Network Administrator at the organisation to complete this assessment task.

Your report must follow these guidelines and must include the following:

· Analyse the concerned data and the nature of network faults

· Review the impact of the network faults on the users and the actions required for their rectification

· Explain and elaborate the alarm and network data as per the organisational policy

· Include an Action plan for the rectification of the faults and the restoration of the services

· Explain the prioritisation of network fault rectification as per the organisational policy and SLA

· Include list of network administrative tasks that can be done as per the organisational policy

Assessment Task 2B – Project

Project on implementation of action plan and repair activities along with the escalation procedures

This assessment task requires the student

to implement the repair activities on the network and the application of the escalation procedures to rectify the network problems and to restore the network services.

The student will act as the Adam-Network administrator and will perform the troubleshooting and fault resolution as per the action plan defined in the report. The student needs to ensure that the network is stable and the users are getting the optimal performance of the network.

During the project, the student needs to troubleshoot, rectify and test/monitor the network performance. The student will perform this activity in the computer LAB where the LAN setup is to be provided. The student will perform the implementation according to the scenario and will consider the network diagram for better understanding. As mentioned earlier following are the network faults that have been experienced by the users in the past days:

· Duplicate IP Addresses
· IP Address Exhaustion
· DNS Problems
· Single Workstation Unable to Connect to the Network
· Unable to Connect to Local File or Printer Shares

The trainer assessor will act as the IT Manager of the college and will supervise the task. The student needs to perform the following tasks for the implementation of network fault rectification and service restoration.

The student needs to perform the following tasks:

· Analyse the network faults and the data to gauge the nature of the fault

· Check with different users about the impact of the network faults

· Start troubleshooting as per the action plan

· Implement troubleshooting and network fault rectification on the whole network to ensure that all the components are properly connected and network connection is stable

· Perform the troubleshooting as per the priority defined in the organisational policies, eg, troubleshooting the server and access point connectivity on priority

· Check for the following:

· Improper connection of cables

· Router, switch or hub port is faulty or down.

· Traffic overload on the link or particular interface.

· Configuration issue at layer-1.

· While performing troubleshooting isolate the workstation or network component which is showing/creating the problem

· Locate and troubleshoot the network faults by making changes to the network settings, check for the IP addresses and make changes to the IP address or DNS if required

· Reset the alarm and network configuration to the default or already existing settings

· Once the network faults have been troubleshoot and the faults have been rectified, you need to test and monitor the network connectivity for stable connection and restoration of services using PING, TRACERT commands using the command line prompt.

Assessment Task 2C: Role Play

Role Play on Network fault rectification

This assessment task requires the student

1. Role play task (How, where and to what audience):

You will assume/take on the role of a Network Administrator to complete this assessment task.

This task is the continuation of the above tasks
. You need to read and understand the given scenario prior to start the activity.

Also at the end of the meeting the student needs to design minutes of meetings on the network fault rectification and also to present the report developed in the previous tasks to the IT Manager as the final and official document on Network support of the college.

You will act as the Network Administrator and the Trainer/assessor will act as the IT Manager while one student will volunteer to act as Accounts Manager of the college while one more student will volunteer to act as a network user.

You need to discuss the following:

· Discuss the network troubleshooting arrangements with the account’s manager and negotiate arrangements

· Discuss and explain the IT Manager, network user about the network rectification process as both are affected by the network outrage

· Discuss and inform the end user and the IT Manager about the fault rectification and its troubleshooting and the restoration of the network services as per the service level agreement which ensures optimal and stable network connectivity.
