Objectives- What will I be able to do?
You will learn how to conduct research in the medical field on a particular chronic disease. This paper/presentation will
reinforce your understanding of many of the body systems and how they work. In class, we discuss a number of
systems of the human body and how they function. This project will reinforce your understanding of the cellular
mechanisms and bridge those with the anatomy and physiology of the human body while discovering the particular
effects of a chronic disease.
You will need to do intense research using textbook, journals, newspapers or interne to prepare your project.
THINGS TO DO:
Step 1- You must answer the questions mentioned under each section below and submit to your instructor. Your paper
must be typed, double spaced, Times New Roman 12 font.
The format of the paper/presentation should include following FIVE sections/paragraphs:
o Indicators of the disease in general
o Treatments and Causes
o How does the disease affect anatomically?
o How does the disease affect physiologically?
o Effects of the disease on individual lifestyle
Step 2- Summarize your project into a 3-4-minute presentation that you will present in the class.
Step 1- Answer to the following questions.
You can summarize the answers of the questions under each section into one paragraph. Thus, your project will have
total 5 paragraphs.
Paragraph 1: Indicators of the disease in general.
? When is the disease usually detected?
? Can the disease be detected before birth? If so, what kind of testing is used and what is the most
common outcome? How is the disease detected after birth?
? What are the signs and symptoms of the disease?
? How long does the individual with the disease usually live?
Paragraph 2: Treatments and causes of the disease.
? What are the causes/risk factors for the disease?
? What is the current treatment for the disorder/disease?
? Any recent advancement in the treatment of the disease in medical science.
Paragraph 3: Discuss what this disease affects anatomically.
? Which body systems/organs are affected by the disease?
? What are the specific features of the anatomical change that occurs in those organs from this disease?
? Can this anatomical change be corrected?
Paragraph 4: Discuss what the disease affects physiologically.
? What are the specific physiological changes that occurs in the affected organs from this disease?
? What types of problems does this create for the entire system or for the body?
? Can this physiological change be corrected? If so, in what ways? If not, how might an individual live
with such a physiological change?
Paragraph 5: Effects of the disease on individual lifestyle.
? How does this disease affect individual’s lifestyle? Include all aspects of the disease in relation to the
entire human body.
? How does an individual with this disease try to adjust with their daily lifestyle?
? What is the quantity vs. quality of life issues involved in living with this disease?

Summary – What is this activity about?
Chronic diseases affect a wide range of individuals and have an even wider range of symptoms. In this assignment, you
will conduct research on one chronic disease of your interest. Each of you will be required to select a different chronic
disease to maximize the variety in each class. Possible topics will be provided by your instructor.
