1.Explain why music is often more effective than words for preschool children.

Little children cannot freely express their thoughts either orally or in writing.  Instead, children express themselves through movement, sound, and art.  Thus, if they can express themselves in these ways, it makes sense that they can learn through them too.  Music contributes to the more active development of children.  A 2010 study by the National Academy of Sciences says that children find music more engaging than speech and are born with the ability and desire to move rhythmically to music (Carla Tanguay, MA, MT-BC, 2018)

What activities would you use with children to develop their phonological awareness? (Refer to Fig. 4.1)

Phonological awareness is sensitivity to the sound structure of a language (Yopp & Yopp, 2009). It is the ability to hear, identify, and play with sounds in spoken language, including rhymes, syllables, and phonemes. Preschool children pay great attention to rhyming, playing with the sounds of the language, including syllables, using rhymes, songs, and finger play. For example, one of my favorite games, “I spy,” can be played everywhere. In this game, you can train sounds by choosing words with characteristic, easily audible initial sounds. Moreover, of course, reading is the best way to sound the perception of words.

Explain how you have (or could have) used music to promote your own cognition or memory.

Music, for me, acts as an “energy.”  Therefore, I sometimes look forward to when I can relax to my favorite melody. For example, I can say that Mindlab International created the composition “Weightless,” in which, according to all the rules of science, they brought together transitions and rhythms. Once a person says what music he likes, how much can he understand his character or existing needs at a particular moment? I love music and think it does magical things in everyone’s life. Moreover, I am self-conscious that everything that can be sung is remembered much better than taught as a poem.

How can the use of music help in developing literacy, math and the social sciences in the early childhood classroom?

The use of music can help in the development of literacy, mathematics, and social sciences. It is also effective for children who have early intervention services. Music therapy is considered a connected service under the Federal IDEA Act (IDEA, 2016). Music lessons develop the skills of spatial thinking and counting skills. For example, categorization is an important cognitive skill for children’s development, and music offers many opportunities for this. For example, “5 Little Monkeys” is a great song that I use in class and for my kids at home;  this is a song that counts from 5 to 0. So is the song “Ants Are Marching,” which combines both words with rhyme and the ability to count, and you can also add movement and engage in creative social play (WETA, 2023).
